A Weekend at Our World Underwater - February 20th-22nd, 2009
This past weekend, myself and several others from TGADC traveled to Chicago for the 39th Annual Our World Underwater show. I've been going to Our World Underwater regularly for the past 20 years, sometimes as a dive consumer, sometimes working the show in a booth but mostly to see old friends and make new ones. Over the years I've seen Our World Underwater grow from a small grass roots show held in the meeting rooms in the Hyatt O'Hare to a sophisticated show in the adjacent Rosemont Convention Center. Much of this growth and maturity has come from the excellent work of the volunteers who produce the show and primarily from the vision and dedication of Patrick Hammer, the President of Our World Underwater. Patricks enthusiasm and excitement for diving is infectious.
Saturday morning and afternoon was spent on the exhibit floor talking with a variety of manufacturers and travel destinations. Attendance was excellent - spurring the thought that despite the economic worries divers are wanting to get out and get diving. Saturday evening we were back to the film festival featuring films about diving in Indonesia, the Philippines, diving with Cuttlefish & Sperm Whales, shark conservation and a sneak peak at Season 2 of the PBS series Jonathan Bird's Blue World. We also got to see the video winners from the Wetpixel and DivePhotoGuide contest.
Sunday our visit to the now very snowy Windy City wrapped up with some more time on the exhibit floor and the silent auction for a one of a kind, original Carlos Hiller oil painting. This year the painting featured Orca Whales feeding on Salmon. Congratulations to TGADC owner Steve Olfe for once again being the high bidder in the silent auction. Proceeds from the auction benefit Project A.W.A.R.E.
Join us next year in February for our trip again to Our World Underwater which will be celebrating it's 40th year.
The weekend started out as usual with the Friday night film festival featuring films on great lakes wreck diving, winning still images from the 4th Annual Wetpixel.com and DivePhotoGuide.com photo contest, diving the U-352 in North Carolina and diving in Guadalcanal.

PADI Sidemount Courses Offers Alternate Equipment Configuration
Congratulations to PADI Course Directors Steve Olfe and Terry Flynn for becoming only the 2nd and 3rd PADI Instructor Trainers anywhere for the new PADI Sidemount Diver Specialty Course. Steve & Terry attended a comprehensive training course this past weekend in Florida to come up to speed on the PADI version of this type of equipment configuration.
Sidemount equipment configuration allows both the open water and technical diver the ability to carry two (or more) independent cylinders on their sides rather than have to carry heavy double cylinders on their back. This allows the diver to avoid carrying a heavy load to and from the water, it makes entries and exits easier and for the traveling diver, it eliminates the need to find double cylinders to do technical dives.
Steve and Terry are the St. Louis area's only full time professional DSAT Instructor Trainers, PADI Course Directors and DAN Instructor Trainers. Steve is also an experienced cave diving instructor with several technical diver agencies.
Steve and Terry are now offering the Sidemount Diver course for any interested diver. Contact them at (636) 949-0880.

New BSA Venture Crew Now Forming
The Great American Diving Company is sponsoring a Scuba diving Venturing Crew in the New Horizons Scouting District. A Venture crew is a group of youth between the ages of 14 and 21 years of age. While the New Horizons District covers the West County area, all youth and adults are welcome to join the crew from any area. Meetings will be held at the Chesterfield store in the Chesterfield Commons.
Ben Brennecke, New Horizons Senior District Executive, is “Very excited about a new Scuba Venturing crew in his district and The Great American Diving Company sponsoring the crew” Ben said he “Was impressed with the operation on Main street store” and he even signed up for a Discover Scuba, try Scuba diving, at the store’s Aqua Center on his visit.
Steve Olfe, owner of the The Great American Diving Company, assigned one of his Master Scuba Instructors, Bill Cowley, to provide leadership and Scuba training for the crew’s meetings. Steve said “Bill is a great fit since he has over 15 years of scouting experience and holds the top PADI Scuba Instructor rating. We also have many great instructors on our staff to help out the Scuba diving crew.”
“The focus of the crew will be to learn to Scuba diving and participate in other venture scouting events” said Bill. “Scouting has a great deal to offer today’s youth. I would think the crew would also attend other scouting events like Fall Fun Rally, Skiing Night, Scouting 100 year Anniversary, and Sea Base just to name a few.”
Anyone interested in learning more about the Venturing Crew can contact Ben Brennecke (314) 256-3072 or Bill Cowley (636) 787-7882. The first meeting dates have been set up for March 24, 2009 at 7 pm and April 2, 2009 at 7pm to find out more information about the crew. Feel free to attend either evening. The meetings will be at the Chesterfield Store, 138 Chesterfield Valley Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63305 (636) 787-7882.
